Dangerous Christian on Choosing Humility:

If you want to build a house, you’ve got to start with a blueprint. You’ll also need a good supply of raw materials-cement, brick, joists, nails, shingles, and the like. As God goes to work to develop us into Dangerous Christians, he brings all the supplies that are needed.

Except for one thing.

“My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit,” King David cries out. “A broken and contrite heart, you, God, will not despise” (Ps. 51:17). All God asks is that we come to him as we are. This is the essence of humility. Our nature is to hide, pretend, and minimize our brokenness, but the love of Jesus empowers us to come clean with all our imperfections, because “we know and rely on the love God has for us” (1 Jn. 4:16). We know that God is working all things for our good, redeeming our darkest secrets and greatest failures for his glory.

Humility is a daily spiritual practice, not a one-time prayer or an item to check off a list. It’s an ongoing fight in our world of selfies and self-absorption, iPhones and I-focus. It’s the choice to die to ourselves-our desire to prove our point, to be noticed and validated by others.

Choose humility today. Over and over again. If it’s any consolation, humility may well be one of the most powerful forces in the universe, for with it, Jesus bought our redemption and salvation.
