Fiji (Australia) Week in Review

Day 13-February 13th

Screen Shot 2014-02-16 at 7.56.13 PMThis day 13 students got up before the sunrise and headed to the airport to check in for their flight to Sydney, Australia. The 7 other remaining students got up early as well to catch their shuttle to the Fiji resort they would be staying at for the next 4 nights!

The Sydney group made it to Sydney on time with no problems getting through customs. We rented a commuter van, and a rental car, and would take on the Sydney traffic for the next 5 days! We went straight from the airport to Coogee Beach where we were staying. By the time we arrived at our hotel it was around 3pm, so most of us just chilled on the beach, unpacked, and at Gourmet Hamburgers at a place called Moo Gourmet Burgers. For some reason we were all craving a hearty burger since Fiji doesn’t accommodate this craving. Afterwards we were all pretty stuffed and just relaxed and crashed. We were all pretty wiped from the travel.

Day 14-February 14th (Valentine’s Day)

Screen Shot 2014-02-16 at 7.55.55 PMToday we woke up and headed to the the Toranga Zoo, which is located right on the Sydney Harbor, and across from the iconic Sydney Opera House. All of us were pretty impressed with the Zoo, even those of us who had been to the World Famous San Diego Zoo. The Kangaroos were an overall favorite for the students, we even had one student nearly cuddle with a kangaroo!

After we looked through all of the exhibits at the Zoo we caught a ferry across the Harbor to Circular Quay, which is exactly where the Sydney Opera House is located, along with other restaurants and souvenir shops. Most of us grabbed lunch along the water, took a bunch of photos of the Opera House, and then headed back to the Zoo to ride

the Sky Rail back to the front of the park. From there we headed back to Coogee because the Donyes’ needed to get ready for their hot Valentine’s Day date. Adam was surprising Stephanie by taking her to see The Magic Flute at the Opera House. All in all it was a Happy Valentine’s Day for all the students in Sydney and at the resort in Fiji.

Day 15-February 15th

This day most of us slept in, except those who are traveling with a 21 month old :). But when the students finally woke up we headed up to Manly Beach to watch the Australian Surf Open. This was a favorite for several of the Link Year students. Fun atmosphere, lots of people, and just an all around neat experience.

That night most of the students split off and all had dinner on their own at different places.

Day 16-February 16th

Screen Shot 2014-02-16 at 7.59.21 PMEvery single student got up early this day and we all headed out as a group to attend Church at Hillsong, the same church that Hillsong United started leading Worship at! To say the least, Worship was amazing. The students enjoyed it so much that some of them went back to the 6pm service.

The afternoon was spent at the famous Darling Harbour walking around looking around at shops and walking along the water. It was fun, but the students seemed to like hanging out at Circular Quay better that the Harbour.

Day 17-February 17th

Travel Day back to Nadi. We are recharged and ready to finish strong!

….and here is what the group that stayed in Fiji did:

Day 13-February 13th

Today we woke up at 6:00 and headed to the airport to catch a bus to Singatoka, Fiji. We were on the bus for an hour and a half before arriving to Sandy Point – the cottages we stayed in for the next four nights. The cottages were right on the beach and we could see and hear the beautiful ocean from our rooms. After settling in we went into town to go grocery shopping. We spent the rest of the day searching for wifi, hanging out on the beach, and exploring the resort that was next door.

Day 14-February 14th (Valentine’s Day)

Today we all slept in and spent most of the day relaxing and laying on the beach. After lunch we went to the resort and got chocolate shakes! After the shakes we went to the pool and swam for a couple of hours. This day did not feel like a real Valentine’s Day for us because we were very secluded and away from civilization. We decided to celebrate the same day America celebrated the holiday. It was so nice to get wifi everyday and be able to talk to family and friends back at home. The time change made it difficult to talk in the evening but we managed to plan times to talk. For dinner we made grilled cheese and then headed to bed!

Day 15-February 15th

Today we woke up and went to the coffee shop next door. We got coffee then went to the beach and relaxed. In the evening we went to a little pizza restaurant called Casablanca! The pizza was amazing and the Fijians who owned the restaurant were very welcoming and loved that we came to eat in their restaurant.

Day 16-February 16th

It has been so nice to have so much free time and be able to hang out and relax on the beach. We have loved having this five day break to have a time to make our own food and live in a little cottage. This was a good week to have time for ourselves and have a lot of time to spend with the Lord.

Day 17 – February 17th

Today we packed and headed back to Nadi, Fiji where we will finish our month, do some more papaya farming, and representing Jesus in the islands of Fiji!
